Opening Word
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." — Ecclesiastes 3:1
Today, on the autumn equinox when light and darkness stand in balance, we are invited to walk into this new season with gratitude — to root ourselves in faith and family, to seek balance in our own bodies, and to set an intention on your walk today for the season ahead.
This Week’s Demand: We Want Healthy Bodies
Each week, these SOS Dispatches lift up one of the demands from GirlTREK’s 10-Point Plan for Joy and Justice.
This week’s demand is clear: We Want Healthy Bodies.
We demand immediate access to affordable and high-quality healthcare for all, including preventive care, reproductive care, traditional medicine, access to resources for substance abuse recovery, and treatment that respects self-determination.
Systems Change Spotlight: Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI)
This week, we stand in solidarity with our sisters at the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) as they welcome their new President and CEO, Joy D. Calloway. Together, we share a vision for healthy bodies, strong families, and generational power.
Read their call to action for us below:
“At the Black Women’s Health Imperative, we know that our health equals generational power. Black women are already the decision-makers, caretakers, healers, and advocates in our families and communities. One part of our framework for lasting change is encouraging every woman to see herself as the Chief Health Officer (CHO) of her life, recognizing that personal well-being is a vital piece of community well-being. But the work is not all on Black women. We know that systems need to change, and that is why we focus on transforming policy, driving research, and leading advocacy that makes lasting impact.”
“Imagine communities where our youth grow up with a higher standard of care and where we have access to the resources and information to help us make the best choices for our health. That vision drives everything we do. From protecting reproductive health at every stage of life to groundbreaking research on breast and cervical cancer, to preventing chronic disease with programs backed by science, we are creating the conditions for Black women to live longer, fuller, and more joyful lives.”
Call to Action: Join them on the road to generational health. Visit BWHI.org and follow @blkwomenshealth. Because Black women’s health has always been imperative.
How We Respond: Walk. Talk. Solve Problems Together.
At GirlTREK, we fight the three deadly I’s — inactivity, isolation, and injustice — by walking, talking, and solving problems together. This week, our sisters showed what that looks like in action:
WALK
In Denver, Cynthia Thompson and her daughter, Miya, joined a mother-daughter hike at Red Rocks, led by Pam Jiner. At 24, Miya is stepping boldly into the next generation — inspired by her mother’s walk and now launching her own career in health and wellness. This is the vision of GirlTREK: daughters rising to lead, proving our movement is generational and planting seeds of health and liberation for tomorrow.
TALK
In Seattle, WA, crews across the city walked in love and solidarity with long-time crew leader Michelle Reese, who lost her son, Robert, to gun violence last week. These women didn’t just walk — they gathered to talk, to pray, and to hold Michelle in the safety of sisterhood. Michelle has given so much to this movement and her community. Today, we hold space for her, and we walk for a world where our families can be safe, and our sons protected. We love you Michelle.
SOLVE PROBLEMS TOGETHER
In Georgia, Ch8sing Waterfalls, founded by member Deborah McGlawn and inspired by GirlTREK, gathered women at Lula Lake Land Trust. Their annual event connects women to the healing power of the outdoors while teaching environmental stewardship — proving that healing our bodies and healing the earth go hand in hand.
Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, our sister Yolanda, who leads GirlTREK’s Justice Impact work, represented us at the AJFO Conference. She led early morning walks, facilitated workshops, and connected with leaders across the country about how to better support justice-impacted women.
Call to Action: Where to Show Up
This week, we walk for Healthy Bodies.
