Sunrise Walk for Our Mothers - This Sunday

Dear Sisters,

We weren’t planning this. But when the Spirit says move, we move.

This Sunday, Mother’s Day, at 8AM ET, we’re going to gather.

We’re going to walk.

We’re going to call the names of the women we are the daughters of—in sacred tradition, in celebration, and in love.

And we are inviting you—every single one of you—to walk with us from wherever you are.

Before the church service.

Before the brunch.

Before the cards.

Come walk. Come pray. Come sing. Come honor the women in your family.

Join from wherever you are, by dialing:  +13052241968,,94584948331#

Why?

Because it’s Mother’s Day. And we want to create space. To praise. To honor. To rejoice. To remember.

Because for some, this weekend is beautiful. And for others, it’s complicated.

So bring the women in your family.

Bring the girls in your life. We will hold holy space for them.

It will be an honoring of all the women who came before us. It will be an honoring of the villages that raised us.

And it will be an honoring of our sister, and our VP of Organizing, Cynthia Thompson, whom many of you know.

Cynthia is one of the original architects and founding members of this movement.

She is the reason Mississippi walks.

She has organized thousands of women and as many churches around the country.

She is a mother of six. A beloved wife. A woman of unshakable faith.

And she has loved this movement with her whole heart.

And this past weekend, Cynthia lost her firstborn daughter.

Nia Imani Thompson. Thirty-two years old. Pictured above.

Nia was raised in this movement.

She walked with us at Selma 50.

She was there in Colorado for the #StressProtest.

The last text she sent her mom was one of the two of them out on a walk in their GirlTREK hats.

Nia was light. She was love. She was one of our own.

And so, we will walk.

For Cynthia.

For Nia.

For every mother carrying the weight of love and loss.

For every daughter watching what we do next.
