DaughtersOf Discussion With Angela Davis and Nikki Giovanni

We are in AWE, GirlTrek family! What an incredible moment last night was with ICONS Angela Davis and Nikki Giovanni, who joined us on our FB Live to kickoff our #DaughtersOf campaign! They poured their all into us and I hope all 500K+ of you who have watched so far deeply absorbed the self-care and survival secrets they so intimately shared. If you missed the lively discussion, you can watch the replay on Facebook or Youtube. You’ll want to take notes because these legends dropped gems!

It was truly a beautiful way to bring in our #DaughtersOf campaign and we are more inspired, eager, and ready to honor our foremothers than ever before.

So today, we are officially kicking off the #DaughtersOf Social Challenge and asking YOU to share YOUR #DaughtersOf story on social media!

Who are YOU the Daughter Of?

Our goal is to flood the internet this weekend and throughout the month of May with photos of our mothers and foremothers to acknowledge the wisdom and meaningful lessons that we must use to guide our steps, especially during such challenging times.

Here is how to tell your #DaughtersOf story:

How many generations can you name?

What secrets did you learn about self-care or survival?

Here is Morgan’s #DaughtersOf story:

morgan.png

I am Morgan, daughter of Carol, daughter of Letha, daughter of Willie, daughter of Sarah and they taught me how to survive. All my life, I watched my mother get filled with the Holy Ghost. She danced until her chest cracked open and fire animated her feet. It was like watching a spiritual warrior go to battle. My mom sowed all she had into me — joy, hustle, faith and resilience. And every day, she teaches me love. How many generations can you name? What secrets did you learn about self-care or survival? I’m tagging my girls @razz2theb @toyahbrooks @themightyupsetter @julietyaaasantewaasante @thebudgetnista @luvvie @majoracarter @alex_elle to tell their #daughtersof story.

Here’s another example:

I am Tina, daughter of Trina, daughter of Charlestine, daughter of Ruth, daughter of Lucinda, daughter of America. I learned so many secrets of self-care and survival from my foremothers but the most important lesson from my mother was to be brave - to try anything once. If you don’t like it, at least you tried. This has always been a powerful lesson and no regrets. There is no failure in trying. I’m tagging my friends @mzahmad, @jamilaraegan, @missjillscott @erykahbadu, and @tiffanyhaddish join me and #GirlTrek in telling THEIR #DaughtersOf stories.

That’s all there is to it! Just be sure that your caption follows the script since it’s a central part of the challenge. And be sure to include the hashtag #DaughtersOf so we can see it!

Plus, since this weekend is Mother’s Day, we’ll be giving out special prizes to two lucky participants who share their stories on Instagram! The winners will receive an awesome beauty giveaway from our partners at Beneath Your Mask, valued at $215 each. For a chance to win, share your story to IG on Sunday following the instructions above and include #DaughtersOf in your caption!

Happy Mother’s Day GirlTrek family! We send you our love and can’t wait to see your #DaughtersOf stories! Be sure to head over todaughtersof.com to learn more about the campaign — and stay engaged on our Facebook and Instagram pages, we have more exciting surprises in store for you.
