A Mother’s Day Call to Action

This Mother’s Day Weekend GirlTrek invites you to take a walk with a woman in your life and have a #DaughtersOf conversation.

We are the daughters of freedom fighters, of way-makers, of storytellers and keepers of culture. We are the daughters of healers and teachers and prophets. Women who know how to make a dollar and a meal stretch. Who love us fiercely. Women whose prayers move mountains. Women who carry wisdom in their bodies. Wisdom passed down from generations and carried on through conversations from mother to daughter, gathered around the kitchen table or sitting between legs combing hair.

But there is so much that remains unspoken between us. There are so many conversations we have yet to have with the women in our lives.  About survival, about self-care, about love, about healing.

What more can we learn from them? What ancient wisdom can we gather up and pass down to our daughters?

What we learn (and discover about ourselves in the process) will sow seeds that impact generations of women in our bloodline.

This Mother’s Day we honor this maternal wisdom. Now is the time to document the life lessons, the beauty secrets, and the family rituals.

CALL TO ACTION

Each of us has a woman or girl in our life that we should walk and have a conversation with this weekend. Let’s do it together as a mass movement! Let’s commit to making this weekend about more than flowers and brunch.

We know that some of our mothers are no longer here. Let’s tell their stories to someone we love. We know that some of us have strained relationships with our mothers. Let’s walk and talk about it with someone we care about.

Let’s let love in. Let’s let healing in.

Take a walk with a woman or girl in your life and have a #DaughtersOf conversation. Sit at her proverbial feet and listen. Write down her self-care principles. Record the stories. For your daughter, and her daughter and the daughters to come.

We have created a set of powerful questions inspired by GirlTrek’s Daughters Of Conversation Series to guide you.

In 2020, we brought you the first-time-ever discussions with remarkable Black women like icons Angela Davis and Nikki Giovanni, and daughters of the movement Dr. Bernice King and Ilyasah Shabazz, and the presidents of the most historic institutions dedicated to Black sisterhood.

Our goal is to:

  • Inspire women everywhere to learn their #daughtersof stories.

  • Create a new tradition where we tell the stories in every room we enter.

  • Catalog the most powerful self care secrets for Black women passed down from our mothers and grandmothers.

And we’re starting this weekend.

THE ASK:

  1. INVITE: Make a date to walk with your mother, a woman, or a girl in your life this Mother’s Day weekend. You can take a walk any time starting Friday. Share the invite and memes below with a woman you want to walk with. You can email it, text it, or share it on your social media and tag her!

  2. WALK: Take a 30-minute walk. Use the questions we provide this week to start the conversation on your walk.

  3. SHARE: Share your #DaughtersOf story on social media. Take a video while out on your walk naming as many women in your matrilineal line as you can. Share your video on social media using #daughtersof. Use the script below to guide you.

"I am [your first name],

Daughter of... [mothers first name],

Daughter of... [grandmothers first name],

Daughter of... [great grandmothers first name].

I learned a #selfcaresecret from [insert name of the woman you walked with or from your matrilineal line].

She taught me [insert self-care secret].

I'm tagging my girls [insert women you've tagged] to tell their #daughtersof story and share a #selfcaresecret to help GirlTrek celebrate the stories of a million Black women. #girltrek #daughtersof

What self-care secrets did you learn on your walk?  We’ll be selecting one woman at random to receive an all-expense paid trip to New York with her mother or a woman in her life to attend the Webby Awards on Monday, May 16th along with GirlTrek Co-Founder, Vanessa!

To win you must share your #DaughtersOf story on social media (IG or Twitter) by midnight on Mothers’ Day, Sunday May 8th to be eligible. You must use #DaughtersOf in your post and tag @GirlTrek. Don’t have an IG or Twitter account? Share your video with us via email at socialmedia@girltrek.org

This may be the most important conversation you have this year. Lean in.

We hope you will walk away with a deeper connection to the women you love.

Your sisters,

Vanessa and Morgan
