These women are heroes of the summer

These women are heroes.

They’ve gone over and beyond to welcome Black women.

Month after month, they’ve hosted a Welcome Walk in their neighborhood.

That’s hundreds of women who’ve felt the love of this sisterhood.

As we head into the weekend, we celebrate them.

Women like Shawn Simmons [pictured above] in Renton, Washington who hosted a 3-mile walk at Cedar River Trail.

Women like Undrella Woody from Birmingham, Alabama who said Black women, you are welcome at Eastlake Park. Women like Natalie Hart from Katy, Texas and Valarie Paige from Raymond, Mississippi and Nicole Seahorn Hameen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They all joined us in our Summer of Radical Women and hosted Welcome Walks in June and July, in this record-breaking heat, to make sure that Black women in their neighborhoods found sisterhood.

We see you out here organizing. Building community. Getting in the best shape of your life (and helping other Black women do the same).

We see your dedication. Your consistency. Your leadership.

We have women like Ericka Davis in Savannah, Georgia who has hosted a Welcome Walk every week since Juneteenth.

And women like Carla Davis in Virginia and Fay Crooks in New Jersey who have hosted walks nearly every week in July.

A dozen women have already put pins on the GirlTrek map for the 3rd Saturday in August.

And we thank you.

Thank you to LaToya Jackson who made sure Gastonia, North Carolina was on the map. And Frankie Clifton Patton who showed out for Yazoo City, Mississippi.

There are hundreds of women who thank you too.

Because you welcomed them with open arms.

Because you inspired them to get out and walk.

Because you reminded them of the power of sisterhood.

If you haven’t hosted a Welcome Walk yet, you just need to host one. That’s it.

Our next Welcome Walk is Saturday, August 19th. If you would like to host a walk in your neighborhood, go here to put a pin on the map. It’s simple to set up your walk. But if you need help, please email us at info@girltrek.org and our team will walk you through the steps.

Luckily, you don’t have to wait until August 19 to walk with your sisters because women from around the country will be walking and talking with Vanessa and Morgan for the next Sisterhood Saturday on August 5th. Dial in (646) 876-9923 (CODE: 734464325) at 9AM PT/12PM ET to listen live.

It will be an opportunity for you to set intentions for the month of August, to have a shared conversation about healing with women from around the country, and to shift the energy and atmosphere of your life. Yes, all of that can happen in one walk.

All of that and so much more is happening right now for the women who are saying yes to themselves each day. Be one of those women this weekend. Lace up, put on your blue shirt, take a walk, let us know. #GirlTrek.

See you outside,

The GirlTrek Team
