In a fantastic conversation with Mirna Valerio for Merrell’s Celebration of GirlTrek , Jewel Bush talked about her work as our Chief of External Affairs and shared a beautiful testimony to how she’s learned more about radical self-care through GirlTrek:

“I grew up in the flatlands. There are no mountains in Louisiana. Through my time with GirlTrek, I’ve been able to discover my love for mountains and expansive mountain views.

Before GirlTrek, it was never on my radar that I could actually climb a mountain, but with GirlTrek I have. It ain’t been Kilimanjaro or the Himalayas, but for this girl who lives below sea level in New Orleans, the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Harper’s Ferry in West Virginia and Rocky Mountain National Park are all pretty impressive.

Taking in the mountain view is self-care. Showing up to the trail head in a matte red lipstick is too. And taking up space in the outdoors for pleasure not labor is the self-care I owe to those who came before me.”
