How can you help?

Last week we sent an email inviting all of you to GirlTREK’s first-ever national membership meeting, broadcasting live on Sunday, March 10th, Harriet Tubman Day. If you haven’t RSVP’d, do so here

It’s a big deal.

We just used population data from the Pew Research Center and other industry data sets to confirm that our members represent 10% of the population of Black women in America. With an intention to double our membership size over the next two years, the possibilities of what we can do as a collective—with the reach and engagement that we have—are endless.

Because of this, we know that our next moves must be strategic, ordered, protected, and judicious. The time is now. The momentum is with us.

That’s why we are so grateful that within minutes of sending last week’s email, there was a response in our inbox from Cara Everett at Rolling Out Magazine, a cultural institution in our community. It simply said, “How can we help?”

Thank you, Cara. And thank you, village. So many of you see the vision. So many of you email and reach out daily with this exact offer, how can I help?

This matters right now because—baby!—we are building, and we will need everybody’s help. We are building a base, building an agenda, building a platform, and so much more.

So if you are like Cara, and you are asking how can I support the GirlTREK movement right now, here are some real time opportunities.

First (and this will always be first) become an active walker and organize your friends and family to do the same. This Spring, we will officially kick off the season with our membership meeting on March 10th, but there’s never a better time to have a Day 1 than now. Pick from a robust set of resources to inspire you here. And you can let us know your Day 1 here.

We have a couple important job openings on our team, including an opening for Vice President of Philanthropy and Partnerships. This is a major callout to the vibrant philanthropic network of Black women professionals we met in Martha's Vineyard that said they wanted to help. We are looking for a development professional who is well versed in how capital is flowing in today’s markets, follows philanthropy trends, relishes in building relationships, and can tell a damn good story about the opportunity and impact of the movement. If that is you, or someone you know, please have them email us at jobs@girltrek.org with  “VP of Philanthropy” in the subject line.

GirlTREK’s national team will be in Selma, Alabama as part of the 59th commemoration of Bloody Sunday and the historic Selma-to-Montgomery March that was the turning point in the fight for voting rights. If you live in the area, we invite you to walk with us in the Annual Selma Jubilee Parade on Saturday, March 2nd. The parade starts at 9am from the Edmund Pettus Bridge. RSVP here and let us know if you’ll be joining us.

GirlTREK’s special edition PURPLE tee is back! In December, we released a limited quantity of our iconic "superhero blue" t-shirt in purple, and we’re bringing it back in celebration of Alice Walker’s birthday, which is today. Happy Birthday, Ms. Alice! Get yours before they sell out (again)!

In gratitude,

The GirlTREK Team
