From Ghana to Martha’s Vineyard

“These resources and these ideas are abundant…”

- Tulaine Montgomery

When we kicked off our Summer of Radical Welcome in June with blue signs that proclaimed “Black Women, You are Welcome Here,” we didn’t just mean in the thousand Blackest neighborhoods of America, although we are good in those hoods for sure.

We meant everywhere there is a GirlTrek woman rocking superhero blue, and those places are many!

From Ghana, where this crew was spotted suited and booted from head-to-toe this past weekend.

To Madison, Wisconsin, where a woman called into our #SisterhoodSaturday walk and talk to say that she had recruited her first woman and organized her first crew.

To the famed beaches of historic Martha’s Vineyard, where the Blackity-Blackest gathering in America has been going on all month long for Black August, with a list of change-makers and politicos, celebs  - and the like - are all gathered on an island that has held so many generational stories of Black wealth and success, a place that takes such great care to nurture its Black roots, a place so unapologetic about its joy, or its opulence.

We love to see it.

And we love to see that GirlTrek presence on the island included an appearance by GirlTrek’s Board Chair Tulaine Montgonery. She was a featured speaker at the Time 100’s first-ever Time House on Martha’s Vineyard [watch here]. She was representing as the CEO of venture philanthropy org New Profit.

Tulaine is just one example of when we say we don’t just walk in the footsteps of changemakers, but alongside them today. She is changing our world and gave many mic drop moments during her conversation, most beloved by us, “We have the benefit of living in a moment where the right thing to do is also the smart thing to do.”

What she said!

Lastly, holla back Martha’s Vineyard! This is an invite to the community that will be on the island on Monday. Morgan and I had the privilege of being invited to participate in a gathering of leaders, and while we are there, we will be walking with one of our mentors. If you are around, you are invited

This is our new M.O. so stay tuned. We're ‘bout to be dropping by y’all places and posting up for walks in the most casual and unexpected way.

May the weekend meet you with love.
